Many, many years ago, when my husband and I had only been together for a short while, I took him away for a romantic weekend to the Wye valley; I didn’t tell him where we were going but I had the directions and we drove down from Oldham, through the countryside avoiding the motorways, down the borders between England and Wales. Eventually despite there being problems with some of the road signs (roads which seemed to have a different number depending on whether you were going east or west) we pulled up opposite our destination.
“Here we are… what can you see?” I asked, pointing to a rather large and imposing hotel.
“Pub?” he replied, hopefully….
We had a super weekend, even though the weather was rather miserable… so… twenty-six years later, last week, we set off on a little expedition to find where our family holiday is going to be next Easter… Each year for the last elven or so years, my cousins and I and our families have rented a large holiday home for the Easter week. 2017 and it’s going to be in Herefordshire near Ross-on-Wye, and we decided to drive up and have a look to see what it’s like…
We found the house and it was just next to a beautiful pub called the Crown and we popped in and had a coffee… well, I had coffee! We decided to drive round the area and see what there would be to do next year, and as we began to pootle, my husband suddenly pulled to the side of the road and stopped. He pointed across at the old grey building:
“What can you see?” he asked.
