We set off home from Portsmouth in rather rainy foggy weather, and as we travelled towards Bristol, the weather changed and we went past banks of primroses, and I couldn’t help but think ‘spring in the air…’ and heard in my head the Marvelettes singing. I looked for it on YouTube, and found what I share below, but I was so sad to read the memories evoked for other people by this song…

The Marvelettes first got together in 1960, and over the years their members included Gladys Horton and Georgeanna Tillman both of whom have sadly died,
Katherine Anderson, Wanda Rogers, Ann Bogan, Juanita Cowart and Georgia Dobbins. Their first record, ‘Please, Mr Postman’ written by Marvelette Georgia Dobbins in 1961 was later covered by the Beatles. A song I particularly remember dancing to at discos I went to in Manchester was ‘My Bay Must Be A Magician’… ‘cos he sure has the magic touch….

Here is ‘When You’re Young And In Love’, with lead vocals by Wanda Rogers; it charted in the UK in 1967:

  1. My favorite video on YouTube lately is Fred Astaire and partner dancing to Jackie Wilson’s Higher and Higher. When I get down in the dumps it never fails to cheer me up. Gotta watch it Lois!
