Several years ago I was listening to a radio programme while I was driving, and it was about the origins of certain famous pieces of music; then the presenter turned it around and began to look at a piece of music which has been used or inspired dozens and dozens of other pieces of music, including the latest popular ‘hits’ today. You’ve probably guessed it’s Pachelbel’s Canon.

It’s not the melody, it’s the chord progression, apparently, D major, A major, B minor, F♯ minor/
D major, G major, D major, G major, A major. When I looked it up, I came across over a hundred songs and pieces of popular music, as well as a couple of national anthems which were based or accidentally echoed Pachelbel.

Now I know it, I hear it everywhere! It seems every other song has that same chord progression, or parts of it… It seems inescapable! This is a very abbreviated list of the ones I’ve actually heard of:

  • Akon – Don’t Matter
  • All the Young Dudes – Mott The Hoople
  • Aphrodites Child – Rain And Tears
  • Basket Case  – Green Day
  • Brian Eno – Fullness Of The Wind
  • Can’t Stop Loving You  – Phil Collins
  • Changes – David Bowie
  • Coolio  – C U When U Get There
  • Don’t Look Back in Anger – Oasis
  • Don’t Sleep In The Subway  – Petula Clark
  • Every time – Britney Spears
  • Eyes Of The World – Fleetwood Mac,
  • Get Me Away From Here I’m Dying – Belle and Sebastian
  • Go West – Pet Shop Boys
  • Goodbye to Romance – Ozzy Osbourne,
  • In My Life – The Beatles
  • It’s Not Too Late – The Monkees
  •  Kylie Minogue  – I Should Be So Lucky
  • Life Goes On – Tupac
  • My Chemical Romance – Welcome To The Black Parade
  • National Anthem of Russia
  • N-Dubz Ft. Bodyrox – We Dance On
  • Nirvana – El Bosco
  • Opus  –  Mercury Rev
  • Oscar Benton – I Believe In Love
  • Pictures of Lily –   The Who
  • Spicks and Specks  – Bee Gees
  • Streets of London  – Ralph McTell
  • Sugarbabies – Five Tones
  • Sunday Morning – Procol Harum
  • Vitamin C – Graduation
  • Walking on the Milky Way –  OMD
  • Whatever – Oasis

And here is a hilarious video commenting on Pachelbel and his Canon:

By the way, the two fine gentlemen in my featured image were not playing anything remotely like the Canon but some lovely Greek music!
