We’ve been enjoying quite a pleasant summer here; mostly warm but not too warm, a few evenings or over-nights of rain, not always clear blue skies, but sometimes cloudy and grey… but short sleeves and shorts and sandles weather.

However, we wake up today and it’s cold, yes cold and raining and there is a sharp wind blowing. I don’t want to put on shoes, I don’t want long trousers, I don’t want a jumper and coat.

I can’t help but think back to other rainy summer days, one in particular, the day we finished our last exam in the first year at the polytechnic. it had been baking hot, Manchester simmering and shimmering in the heat, and as we sat relaxing in our little flat, suddenly we heard the rain. We rushed outside and there was that wonderful smell of fresh rain on hot tarmac. We may have been a little drunk but we literally danced in the road in the rain!

How beautiful is the rain!

How beautiful is the rain!
After the dust and heat,
In the broad and fiery street,
In the narrow lane,
How beautiful is the rain!
How it clatters along the roofs,
Like the tramp of hoofs
How it gushes and struggles out
From the throat of the overflowing spout!
Across the window-pane
It pours and pours;
And swift and wide,
With a muddy tide,
Like a river down the gutter roars
The rain, the welcome rain!

    • No… 1970… It hadn’t been a real heatwave like the 1976 one, but just a long period of lovely hot weather… also we were studying so I guess we were inside in stuffy rooms and the library!
