I mentioned a couple of days ago the legend of Robin Hood and the TV version which was on the BBC many, many, years ago. How I came to see it I’m not sure. probably at a friend’s house because we had no TV. I probably didn’t see many of the episodes but I knew the stories – everyone in those days knew the stories of Robin Hood. Probably, because TV was such a rare luxury, everything I watched made a great impression and stayed vividly in my mind for years. I can see the actors faces now, hear their voices, and of course, like most people my age who liked adventure stories – sing the theme song!!
There was another TV series, much later which I also watched and enjoyed, starring first of all Michael Praed then Jason Connery as Robin of Sherwood. I really enjoyed that series too! It only had three series with a total of twenty-six episodes, unlike the ‘original’ TV Robin Hood which had 143 episodes! However, the black and white version was only half an hour, compared to the colour series hour-long dramas.
The black and white version was shown first between 1955-1959 and starred:
- Robin Hood (Robin of Locksley) – Richard Greene.
- The Sheriff of Nottingham – Alan Wheatley.
- Little John, Robin Hood – Archie Duncan
- Maid Marian (Lady Marian Fitzwalter), Bernadette O’Farrell and later Patricia Driscoll.
- Friar Tuck – Alexander Gauge.
- Will Scarlet – Ronald Howard and Paul Eddington
There were other characters not in the traditional stories, and Alan-a-Dale and Much the Miller’s son don’t feature very much at all. Other actors who were well-known or became well-known who played parts in the film…
- Lionel Jeffries
- Leslie Phillips
- Jane Asher
- Anne Reid
- Patrick Troughton
- Irene Handl
- Nicholas Parsons
- Sid James
- Joan Sims
- Bernard Bresslaw
- Leo McKern
- Alfie Bass,
- Harry H. Corbett
- Wilfrid Brambell
- Richard O’Sullivan
- Billie Whitelaw,
- Gordon Jackson.
- John Schlesinger
- Nigel Davenport
There seems to be no video available of the original 1950’s soundtrack by Dick James, ”Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen, Robin Hood, Robin Hood with his merry men, feared by the bad, loved by the good….
So here is Clannad with The Hooded Man:
