Where have the readers gone?

I’m sure it’s the same for most bloggers,, you jog along with roughly the same amount of visits, views, likes and comments, some days a little bit up, some days a lot up – and then some days down and other days a lot down. Some posts naturally attract a lot of attention, some unexpectedly do – why did over six hundred Polish people like a perfectly ordinary post? Why did more than three hundred people living in Spain like another? For some reason, at the beginning of the year as we headed towards and then into spring, I had a real surge in the aforementioned visits, views, likes and comments, which was lovely!! Now I seem to be heading into a trough, figures are falling and I’m not having as many ‘conversations’ with people. I’m not alarmed, annoyed or upset – it’s just the way things go – and maybe the lovely weather is keeping people away from their computers!

My friend Andrew Simpson is a much more successful blogger than I am – and I’m not a little proud and smug that it was me who first suggested to him that he might enjoy blogging! His blog is mainly about the small town where he lives, now engulfed by Manchester, Chorlton-cum-Hardy. However he writes about much else, places which have featured in his life such as Eltham in London, Derby, Manchester, Ashton-under-Lyne. He also writes about his travels, mainly to italy and Greece, and he writes about every-day life. He chronicles the lives of people in the past and people now. His history is of the domestic, the small town, the ordinary, the normal, and how that sort of life has been interrupted by world events such as the Great War, and World War 2. If you haven’t come across Andrew’s blog, I really recommend it – push his visits, views, likes and comments even higher!!

Coincidentally, his blog for today is about zeppelins which also feature in my next Radwinter story!

I’m never very sure why I blog at all. It’s all a bit of a mystery to me. And as for readers, that’s totally opaque. I think I’m probably a closet Shaker or perhaps I long to spend the Biblical 40 days in the wilderness roaming the hills of Judea. Perhaps it is my necessity to question, to seek.
