Last year I published a small book pulling together my ideas on writing – it was called ‘So You Want To Write…’ because so many people have said to me over the years that they really, really want to write but don’t know how or where to start. The most simple advice is just to take up your pen and write – a metaphorical pen, it more likely these days is to sit at your keyboard and write! Honestly, it doesn’t matter what you do, just get stuff down, ideas, thoughts, scraps of story, just get them out of your head and onto the paper – or screen. Once they are there you can play with them and knock them into the shape you want!
My little book was a simple guide with suggestions on aspects like character, describing a place, beginnings and endings. I’m planning to share two more books in the series. The first will be ‘So You Want To Write Your Family History’ and it will be ideas and suggestions on how you can tell the story of the people who came before you. It won’t be a guide to research or building a family tree, although there will be some suggestions, it will be doing as the title suggests, offering ideas on writing the story of a family.
The second book, third in the series, will follow on more from the first, and this will be called ‘So You Want To write Some More…’ and although this will refer back to the ideas in the first one – mainly the six P’s (people, place, plot, pace, point of view purpose – and an extra, polish!) the book will be full of ideas of what to write, or ways of writing the story you have in your head.
